High-level English is such a badass skill.
You’ve studied hard, reached C1, and framed your Cambridge English C1 certificate … Now what!?
Does it mean you understand every word in a text or speech instantly? Does it mean you never ever forget to use the definite article “the”?
Definitely not. But it does mean that you can understand 99% of most texts (the vocabulary of a college graduate).
Yes, once you complete a C1 course, you should be able to understand A LOT of words, but, much more importantly, and only if you put in the effort, you will be able to use this massive range of vocabulary, these beautiful nuanced words for precise expression, tons of collocations, formal language, everyday conversational language such as idioms and phrasal verbs.
Using the language is the whole point!
Here’s something interesting about vocabulary (research-based!):
- 1,000 words (80% of the language which surrounds you) will help you speak a language in a day-to-day setting (A2 level),.
- To understand dialogue in film or TV you’ll need to know the 3,000 words, which is 95% of most ordinary texts (B1 level).
- 5,000 words allow you to understand about 98% of most ordinary texts (B2 level).
- To reach the pinnacle of language learning and to understand about 99% of most texts (which means having the vocabulary of a college graduate!), you’ll need to learn 8,000 – 10,000 words.
This is what the C1 level is all about! You’re aiming towards this!
There’s more! As a certified non-native advanced English user, you CAN…
- discuss abstract topics with precision.
- write well-structured, coherent, and stylistically appropriate texts.
- be independent. You self-correct naturally, and use English confidently.
- understand subtleties, sarcasm, jokes, and implied meaning.
- follow complex argument or literary texts.
- speak smoothly and confidently, with fewer hesitations.
- use complex grammatical structures naturally and accurately.
A framed Cambridge English C1 certificate hanging in your bedroom does NOT mean that:
- you’ll never make grammar mistakes again.
- you know every word in the dictionary.
- you have nothing left to learn or improve.
- you never have to search for words while speaking.
- you sound exactly like a native speaker.
And what can YOU DO with all this new knowledge?
Example 1: If you’re an independent educator, like I am, you can reach students worldwide, and deliver your subject in English. You can organize your workweek however you like. For example, I work only three days a week.
Example 2: I’ve collaborated with fellow educators from the USA, Canada, and the UK, taking part as a speaker in their conferences, podcasts, and webinars.
Example 3: I’ve enriched my life by teaching amazing students and have made lifelong friends along the way.
Example 4: I’ve participated in fantastic conferences in my country and abroad free of charge.
Example 5: You can apply to a university abroad and study in the Netherlands (like my student Anja), in Switzerland (like Irina), in Germany (like Nadja), or in the USA (like Julija).
Example 6: You can confidently travel around Europe (like my student Eugenia), the USA (like Andjelka and Milutin), or the UK (like Maksim).
Example 7: As a university lecturer in Serbia (like Jovana), you are required to obtain a C1 certificate, as many universities have a large number of international students.
Example 8: You can become an invaluable asset to your company because you know how to speak confidently in meetings, give presentations, negotiate, and communicate with international clients (like Bojan and Elisa).
